Low, Medium, and Gel Cyanoacrylate Adhesives: What Is the Difference?

A clear comparison of low-viscosity, medium-viscosity, and gel cyanoacrylate for process planning.

Automated cyanoacrylate adhesive filling line for industrial product grades

Low, medium, and gel cyanoacrylate adhesives mainly differ in how they flow and stay in the joint. Low-viscosity grades can penetrate a close interface; medium grades offer more control during drop or nozzle dispensing; gel grades form a more localized bead. TongLin Adhesive treats these categories as process options, not as a simple quality ranking.

Low-viscosity cyanoacrylate

Low-viscosity adhesive is often considered when the joint is close-fitting and the application benefits from capillary movement. It can spread quickly, so the dispensing volume and fixture method need to be controlled. TongLin examples such as S505 and S505 M list a reference viscosity of 1.8–5 mPa·s and a 0.04 mm gap-fill value in the product data.

This category is a sensible starting point when:

  • the parts fit closely and the adhesive must enter the interface;
  • the dispensing equipment can place a small, repeatable amount;
  • the operator can prevent the liquid from travelling beyond the bond line.

It is less suitable when the joint has a large, irregular gap or when a bead must remain on a vertical surface. In those situations, compare a higher-viscosity option instead of simply applying more low-viscosity adhesive.

Medium-viscosity cyanoacrylate

Medium grades balance flow with handling control. T508, S508, and S5495 are examples in the TongLin catalogue with reference viscosity in the 30–50 mPa·s range. Their product-page figures differ in gap fill and cure time, so the grade should be chosen with the assembly and process in mind.

Medium viscosity is commonly evaluated when the process needs a visible drop, a controlled bead, or more time to position the parts. It does not remove the need for clean surfaces, suitable fixturing, or a trial on the actual material combination.

Gel and high-viscosity grades

Gel grades move more slowly and can help keep adhesive in a defined area. CA-S1500 is listed with a reference viscosity of 1000–1500 mPa·s and 0.20 mm gap fill. The larger gap figure should not be read as a guarantee for every joint; cure through the interface, bead shape, and application equipment still need to be checked.

Category Flow behavior Typical process question TongLin reference
Low Fast penetration Can the joint accept a small, repeatable dose? S505, S505 M
Medium More controlled drop Does the bead stay where the operator places it? T508, S508, S5495
High or gel Localized bead Can the thicker layer cure consistently through the joint? S5401, Silicone B, CA-S1500

Do not choose by viscosity alone

Viscosity does not by itself predict final bond strength, compatibility, appearance, or production yield. Compare the grade, substrate, gap, temperature, humidity, dispensing method, fixture time, and packaging together. For a structured selection process, read how to choose cyanoacrylate viscosity, then validate the shortlisted grades on production-representative parts.

If you need a private-label package or a formulation adjustment, review the cyanoacrylate OEM service and send your process details through the Contact page. TongLin’s product team can use those details to define a more useful sample comparison.
