PP and PE are low-surface-energy plastics, so a cyanoacrylate adhesive may not wet or anchor to them as easily as it does to many metals or higher-energy plastics. A reliable B2B project treats surface preparation, joint design, possible primer or activator use, and the final test as one process. There is no universal promise that every PP or PE grade will bond without additional preparation.
Why PP and PE need extra process control
Mould release residue, additives, surface texture, and storage contamination can change wetting. The resin family alone is not enough to predict the result. Record the exact resin or part grade, surface finish, cleaning method, joint gap, adhesive dose, fixture time, and test condition.
| Checkpoint | What to compare | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Surface | Clean, dry, and representative parts | Residue or moisture can change wetting |
| Treatment | Mechanical, chemical, plasma, primer, or activator route | Each route changes the process and must be validated |
| Joint | Gap, overlap, stress direction, and edge exposure | Geometry can dominate the result |
| Test | Fixture, final strength, ageing, and failure mode | A quick hand bond is not a production approval |
Separate activator, primer, and cleaning roles
Cleaning removes a contaminant; an activator may support faster cure; a primer is generally used to modify surface interaction. These functions are not interchangeable. Confirm compatibility with the selected cyanoacrylate, plastic grade, appearance requirement, and downstream process before adding a treatment.
Start with a small matrix: untreated control, agreed cleaning method, and each proposed treatment on the actual part. The cyanoacrylate product range can provide a candidate adhesive, while the accelerator guide explains why cure speed should be evaluated separately from surface adhesion.
Validate before production
Use production-representative parts and repeat the test across batches. Record surface preparation, open time, dose, fixture time, final test, ageing condition, and failure location. TongLin can review an industrial sample through OEM service, but the customer must approve the final PP or PE configuration.
PP or PE compatibility cannot be inferred from the plastic name alone. Send the exact part, resin information, treatment proposal, and acceptance method through Contact before specifying a production grade.
